Design

Probably the most important element in any successful network is the creation of its systems architecture and associated network and service management layers. This design activity is driven directly by needs defined by the networks business strategy and operational plan, and involves detailed specification of all the various network elements. Getting this right significantly improves the networks operational performance and reduces risk and cost.

Some of our specific service capabilities in network design are included here. However, please contact e2E if your specific needs are not detailed, as we have probably completed successful projects in the areas where you need support.

Systems and Architectural Design

View

The core design activity and an essential ingredient to the success of the network, detailed understanding of the networks specifications and needs coupled with high levels of relevant experience enable e2E to deliver Systems and Architectural designs that are based on best practice and independent from any conflicts associated with single supplier solutions.

 Inmarsat Logo

Inmarsat

Project:
e2E assumed responsibility for the technical co-ordination and definition of the next generation Inmarsat UMTS system. This included generation of the overall System Definition Document and Interface Control Documents for the planned network. The work included assessment of the architectural options available for migrating from the GPRS Regional-BGAN to the 3G BGAN network. e2E devised the strategy and planning for this network evolution.

Service Management Design

View

The Service Management layer of any network manages the delivery of the user requirements and experience. It is also an essential ingredient of the operational management and the service level delivery. The design of the Service Management layer of your network is essential to its success. e2E has designed and implemented successful service management structures in many different communication services.

3 (Hutchison)
Project:
e2E worked with 3 (Hutchison) to develop their Operational Support System (OSS) and was responsible for service management design for an integrated work order and trouble ticketing capability that was required to manage across the Network Operations, Service Operations, Customer Care and other network areas.

Network Management Design

View

The Network Management layer manages the network's resources and service levels to the point that it is the essential ingredient of the operational management. The Network Management design for your network is vital to it's success. e2E have designed and implemented successful Network Management structures in many different network types.

Astrium
Project:
e2E generated the Ground Procedure Software requirements and the design documents to automate the control and operations of the SGS for the Skynet satellites, together with the EADS Astrium team. The project included the design and development of software utilising the bespoke JAS scripting language. The script design and development was required to interface with the newly developed satellite operations and control IT infrastructure software.

Prototype Development

View

Customers continue to push back the barriers of technology and services driven by the need to be competitive in their markets and to offer first class services. This creates a need to develop and prototype new network elements from software and hardware to user interfaces. e2E has highly trained network hardware and software engineers capable of delivering working prototypes to address the multitude of issues faced by the leading edge networks.

EADS Astrium

Project:
e2E has been contracted by Astrium to develop a model of a data communications protocol used on the Skynet 5 test network. The work covered writing the model using a Telelogic SDL tool, generation of testing scenarios, running the model to monitor the communications protocols behavior for various scenarios and feedback to the Astrium management team on future enhancements to the tool.

Architectural Evaluation

View

Sometimes even the best systems and architectural designers need the piece of mind given by an independent evaluation of their designs. e2E offer a service to provide independent evaluation of any and all elements of a network and its projected performance to specification.

Project:
Assessment of the architectural options available for migrating the Inmarsat GPRS broadband global area network to a 3G broadband global area network. Following evaluation of the options, e2E devised the strategy and planning for the selected network evolution.

Product Evaluation and Comparative Analysis

View

Most networks are created by the integration of many standard pieces of hardware and software and in most of the cases each of those network elements can have its functionality provided by more than one product solution. This presents network designers and architects with the need to evaluate and compare the various solutions. Likewise new products need to be tested and evaluated against their design requirements. In both cases e2E have the capability to provide an independent evaluation and analysis to our customers to enable them to select the appropriate solutions to their network needs.

Thales Logo

Thales

Project:
e2E were responsible for the definition, specification, implementation and test of an Internet point-of-presence (POP) site for Thales. This infrastructure comprised a range of IP-based commercial equipment and software applications. As part of the selection process various equipment and tools were evaluated to ensure that they could meet the infrastructure requirements, both individually and in combination, in order to identify the most cost-effective solution. This was particularly challenging as the POP design was required to meet stringent availability requirements across multiple sites.

Network Design Documentation

View

Key to a good network design is the ability to be manage, maintain and enhance it long after the original design authority has moved on. This is addressed by having a well documented design which reflects the network architecture and any subsequent changes to the baseline design along with the network build and test approach/procedures. From e2E's experience, this documentation is often neglected and to address this, e2E are able to offer highly skilled and experienced technical authors who having good network design knowledge, can document all elements of the network design to a level of quality consistent with the ISO standards. This documentation enables network managers and network operations personnel alike to assess fully the impact of proposed changes on the design thereby minimising implementation cost and downtime of the network.

Avanti Communications Logo

Avanti Communications

Project:
e2E has been contracted to provide documentation for the Avanti Inspire project. This involved the analysis of the Avanti system to generate Unified Modeling Language (UML) process models and activity diagrams to represent the complete Inspire network. The work included updating existing documentation for the ESA qualification reviews.

Security

View

Very often in communications networks information security is seen as an add-on. At e2E we take the view that it is integral part of the systems engineering activities that lead to the design, development and implementation of successful communication networks. Our experienced security consultants can support the entire security systems engineering lifecycle. We have undertaken study management, procurement support and many other security systems engineering activities including: risk/threat assessment; security policy development; requirements analysis; systems specifications; test specifications; interface definitions; security architecture development; feasibility/compatibility assessments; and evaluation, certification and accreditation. We have worked on secure civil and military communications networks. As such we have experience of JSP 440, MPS, HMG Infosec Standards (IS), CESG Infosec Memoranda, accreditation document sets (ADS), Common Criteria (CC) and relevant ISO standards.
